PRINCE GEORGE— The 8th Annual Autism Awareness Walk brought hundreds to Lheidli T’enneh Memorial Park. The park was filled with blue balloons and clothing- the colour of autism awareness.

The goal of the walk is to make people in the community aware of what autism is. People with autism can have a variety of challenges, including struggles with social skills, speech and nonverbal communication.

Although people with autism have struggles, most are extremely talented in other areas.

A group of mothers founded the Northern Interior Autism Society to bring resources to families.

“Most of them are gifted in a certain, particular thing,” Northern Interior Autism Society Co-founder Jordan Oliver says. “Like my son loves music. Other ones are good at math, or they’re very creative. They usually do have great successes in their life, not just the challenges.”

The Autism Awareness Walk is a celebration of the success people with autism have, despite their challenges. Support systems continue to grow in Prince George, and talking about autism is becoming more normal.
