Something fishy in Vanderhoof

Another successful sturgeon release

Nearly 20 years ago, the Nechako White Sturgeon started to disappear from the Vanderhoof area and a group of locals began a modest program to bring the fish numbers up again.

Last week, 600 school children put five hundred year-old sturgeon back into the river, after they were reared in a state-of-thee-art hatchery in that community.

“You’re seeing a lot of fish right now that are going out as yearlings and they have a significant size to them. We’re also going to try doing some two-year-olds to see what they look like and if the predators bother them the same way as the yearlings,” explains Gerry Thiessen, Mayor of Vanderhoof.

These school children know a thing or two about what’s happening here.

“I like to do it ‘cuz I’m watching wildlife go back to their habitat and I really like it ‘cuz fish are a very big part of he world,” says Brielyn. “But I like watching them go in the water and be free.”

All six hundred students will be the richer for having played their part in the Nechako White Sturgeon Recovery Initiative.
