City Putting Final Touches To Emergency Plan

PRINCE GEORGE – The City is hosting an open house next week so members of the public can become familiar with the new five-year Emergency Strategic Plan.

It essentially sets out the CN Centre and Kin Centres as reception centres in the event of an evacuation. The city has been divided into nine zones and 18 schools have been picked as muster points. The City feels that 80 percent of people would be able to drive themselves to the CN Centre in the event of an evacuation. Perhaps another ten percent would not be able to drive to the reception, but are able to walk to one of the 18 identified schools. Once there, they would be transported to the reception centres.

To be clear, the hazard is there, it always has been there.”

“The remaining folks, those who can’ drive or can’t walk, we would use the traditional method of knocking on their doors and assisting them to buses as needed,” explains Adam Davey, the Manager for Emergency Services.

He says they learned lessons Fort McMurray and California and the hope is the plan will speed up an evacuation plan. But Davey says the idea is not to throw the public into a state of panic.

“To be clear, the hazard is there, it always has been there. The risk might be slightly elevated but I don’t want folks to be concerned. We’re simply preparing for the worst. But it doesn’t change the day-to-day.”

The City will also be launching an educational campaign about the plan and how to be prepared. For more information, click here.

The open house takes place at the Conference and Civic Centre on Wednesday, May 15 from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m.
