One Federal Hopeful Sets The Campaign In Motion

PRINCE GEORGE – Tracy Calogheros is once again tossing her hat in the ring, running a second time as a Liberal candidate in the federal election in Cariboo-Prince George.

It was a very tight race last time, with incumbent Todd Doherty winning by just five percent of the total vote.

“I have been doing what I do in Prince George for 25 years at Exploration Place, I don’t see changing any of that,” she says. “I’ll go back out and talk to people, we’ll look at what the new issues are. Of course, now the Liberals have had four years, almost, in power and so we’ll be talking about the policies they’ve enacted, the policies they may have missed on and where we can go in the next four years.”

She says Justin Trudeau’s poor reputation in Western Canada with respect to his policies around energy and resources won’t impact her campaign, saying the people of Cariboo-Prince George will be electing someone who can best get the concerns of the region to Ottawa and affect change.

While there will be plenty of red campaign signs with the name Calogheros on them, there may be green signs with the same name. That’s because her daughter, Tianni Calogheros plans to run as a Green candidate in the riding held by Bob Zimmer, if she gets the green light from the party.

“I like the Green Party, I think they align best with my views. One, they’re very climate-focussed and I love Mother earth. We live here. We ALL do. And the North is a beautiful place that I want to represent as well,” she says. “And, then of course, the Green Party doesn’t actually whip any of their votes and, so, I can represent my constituents the best whereas other main parties may not be able to do that.” When asked how she will hold her own in a predominantly resource-based riding, she says she represents the youth voice and “maybe it’s time for a change.”
