Parkade upgrades coming

City Council approves budget overrun on parkade upgrade

PRINCE GEORGE — In a move to ensure its structural integrity, city council decided to approve a budget overrun on an upgrade to the 2nd avenue parkade at its meeting tonight (May 27).

A staff report recommended increasing the upgrade from $2.7 million dollars to over $5.1 million.

City staff says the original estimate was made in 2013 and blame the increase on increases to labour and supply costs.

The decision was a cause for great debate with councillors Frank Everett and Brian Skakun opposed because of the major cost involved.

The other councillors argued it wouldn’t be wise to delay the upgrades considering none have been made since the structure was built in 1975.

The money will come out of the City’s downtown off-street parking reserve.
