BURNS LAKE– A new Chief and two Councillors were chosen for a three year term in the Wet’suwet’en First Nation Territory.

Maureen Luggi defeated Vivian Tom with 55 votes, councillors with the winning vote were Heather Nooski and Karen Ogen-Toews.

Luggi says that the mandate for the newly elected council is to pursue long-term government to government negotiations based on governance and reconciliation.

“There is a stronger need to focus on economic reconciliation for the First Nation, to eliminate poverty, improve housing conditions, improve drinking water conditions and the overall health and wellness of the community will be a priority.” stated Councillor Karen Ogen-Toews

Luggi served as the former Chief for Wet’suwet’en First Nation from 1987-2007.
