PRINCE GEORGE – With Halloween coming up soon, Prince George RCMP is reminding everyone to prioritize safety while enjoying the holiday. “This is a busy time of year for celebrations,” said Corporal Jennifer Cooper, BCRCMP spokesperson for Northern B.C. “We want everyone in our community to have fun and stay safe!”

If you’re going trick-or-treating, police recommend wearing a bright costume so you’re easier to see. Make sure your costume lets you walk safely and doesn’t make you trip.

Glow sticks, reflective armbands, or a flashlight can help trick-or-treaters stay visible.

RCMP also suggests that trick-or-treaters stay on sidewalks and cross streets at corners. Let someone know your planned route and carry a cell phone in case of emergency.

Drivers are also asked to be extra careful, and motorists should slow down in areas where trick-or-treaters are out and be prepared for children to cross the road in unexpected places.

If you’re driving in a costume, make sure it doesn’t block your vision or make it hard to drive safely.

RCMP also reminds anyone planning to drink to have a backup plan in case they can’t drive themselves home during Halloween celebrations.

If you plan to use fireworks this month, please check the City of Prince George’s bylaws first.

If you’re worried about fireworks being misused in your neighbourhood, call the non-emergency line at 250-561-3300. Prince George RCMP says people should not call 9-1-1 for fireworks-related concerns. Reserve the emergency number for emergencies.

The main message from police is to enjoy Halloween but keep safety in mind, whether you’re trick-or-treating, driving, or planning your own celebrations.
