First ever national strategy on dementia released

PRINCE GEORGE— A new $50 million strategy aims to help individuals across the country who suffer from dementia and dementia-related illnesses. The federal government released the first ever national strategy on dementia this morning (June 17).

More than 419,000 Canadian seniors have been diagnosed with some form of dementia.

The new strategy has three main objectives:

1. To prevent dementia
2. To advance therapies and find a cure and
3. To improve the quality of life of people living with dementia and their caregivers.

“This is really exciting, we’re sort of taking a moment to stop and celebrate Canada’s first dementia strategy here in our country,” Manager of Advocacy and Education for the Alzheimer’s Society of BC Jennifer Stewart says. “What this strategy represents is really a framework for moving forward: how we can support people with dementia, how we can look at ways to prevent Alzheimer’s disease, and also what we can do to look for the causes and cures of dementia.”
