Elementary Raising money for community

Ecole Lac Des Bois Elementary students raise more than $1500 for community

PRINCE GEORGE–Grade six students at Ecole Lac Des Bois Elementary volunteered and raised a total of $1,794.70 for several organizations in the community.

Chelsea Thiessen’s Grade six class raised money for the Rainbow Lodge Intermediate Care Home, PG Animal Rescue, The Canadian Red Cross and other community groups chosen by the students.

The assignment was divided into three parts, fundraising, volunteering and education. The students raised money through bake sales and hot lunches, they volunteered some of their time to help the organizations and finally presented what they’d learnt to classes throughout their school.

“We’ll be doing this again next year for sure and I think that we’ve made some really good connections in the community, which I think is so important,” Thiessen said.

Theissen says the class project meshed perfectly with School District 57’s Strategic Plan 2016-2021, where the curriculum states Grade six students must complete volunteer hours, become aware of non-profit organizations, and learn leadership skills and qualities.
