PRINCE GEORGE – The Regional District of Fraser Fort George has agreed to move ahead with having Common Tansy declared a noxious weed.

“Tansy is a perennial that spreads rapidly, especially along our roadways. And it’s toxic to grazers and it can taint the taste of cow’s milk and it can caUse dermititis reactions for people who are sensitive to it,” explains Claire Watkins, the City’s Environmental Technician for Integrated Pest Management.

Not to mention it can choke out the native plant life.

The Regional District of Fraser Fort George has heeded a request from the City of Prince George to pursue having Common Tansy declared a noxious weed in the provincial Weed Control Act.

When that happens, it gives Watkins’ department some powers.

“We have a property maintenance bylaw and within that bylaw is embedded language that says we can enforce the Weed Act on private property as long as the weed is listed under the provincial Weed Control Act.”

However, Watkins says she is uncertain how long the process will take, as it is the first time she tried to have a weed added to the legislation. In the meantime, she encourages members of the community to step in and pull the weed when they see it.
