Wildfire crisis prompts travel warning ahead of long weekend in South Cariboo
Residents and travelers heading through British Columbia’s South Cariboo this long weekend are being urged to stay informed, prepare for changing conditions, and consider postponing non-essential travel as wildfire activity continues to impact the region.
The warning comes as the Thompson-Nicola Regional District (TNRD) and BC Wildfire Service continue to respond to the rapidly evolving Pear Lake Fire, part of the Big Bar Complex, which has forced widespread evacuations and disrupted major transportation routes.
Colton Davies, communications manager with the TNRD, said the South Cariboo remains under significant strain following weeks of wildfire activity.
“Much of the South Cariboo is on evacuation order as we speak,” Davies said. “The majority of the electoral area, which is a huge area, is currently under evacuation order, and there are thousands of people out of their homes.”
