PRINCE GEORGE— Prince George’s Marlyne Dumoulin had a super lucky win at Treasure Cove Casino on July 13, winning just over $2.1 million on a slot machine.

People in the community are excited, but despite the possibility of a huge payout, it’s important to remain aware of the risks of gambling.

A University of Calgary study found:

  • The Canadian gambling indsutry generates $13 billion annually;
  • there are approximately 87,000 electronic gaming machines and 33,000 lottery vendors in Canada
  • the average Canadian household spends just over $1000 annually on gambling annually;
  • up to 3% of Canadians suffer from a gambling problem, similar to the rate of alcoholism.

“There’s lots of risks that come along with gambling. I think when we see a big win, especially a local win within the community, there’s definitely people wanting to go out and be the next big winner,” Beverley & Associates Insolvency Administrator Connor Beverley says. “They have to remember there’s risks with gambling and it can have a negative impact on your finances.”

If you or someone else you know suffers from a gambling addiction, there are a variety of ways to seek help, including a toll free number through the British Columbia Responsible & Problem Gambling Program.
