PRINCE GEORGE – More yeas than nays in the community for a multi-billion dollar petrochemical facility proposed for the BCR Industrial site.West Coast Olefins announced yesterday plans for a $5.6 billion petrochemical plant, to be located in the BCR industrial site. It would create as many as a thousand full time jobs.

Local realtor Ken Goss says he started getting calls immediately from investors wanting to get on board.

“We’ve been phone calls from up North as far back as Saskatchewan and stuff like that. So, it’s going to be big and I’m not the only one that they’re phoning.”

He says he has had investor calling looking for land that would accommodate apartment complexes and so on. Reaction from environmental organizations has been quiet, with concerns focused mainly around the location of proposed facility in the Bowl area.

“When I heard about this particular project, I was really shocked that they’re even looking at the BCR Industrial Site because, historically, Prince George is known as a compromised airshed,” says Mary MacDonald, long-time advocate of the environment and the local air quality, in particular. “It’s a vulnerable airshed.”

The company has said it plans to make a Final Investment Decision by the end of next year.
