Apps to keep your mental health in check

TYH: “One more tool in the toolbox,” apps to help keep your mental health in check

Awareness around mental health is something I feel has been brought to light in recent years and the way people go about keeping a good mental health differs from person to person.

For example for me, the gym is my go-to place to de-stress, but for others it might be going on a walk, or reading a book. However in a time where social media seems to be at the forefront of everything, creators have had to get creative in designing new ways to ensure people are maintaining a good mental health.

It makes sense–if you spend a lot of time on your phone, you might want to dedicate some time to your mental health while you’re on there. And seeing that youth might be more inclined to spend more time on their phones, Northern Health launched a Youth Mental Health Campaign and part of that campaign was an app, the thinkFull App.

This is what the app looks like when you first open it up. You are able to check in, look at your stress trends, view your history and access tips right off the bat.
The stress gauge allows you to swipe to the stress level you are feeling at any given time.
And depending on your stress level, you will receive certain tips to help you out.

The app aims to get people tracking their stress levels in order to track patterns and gives users tips on how to manage their stress.

We spoke to Stacie Weich, Regional Lead for Mental Wellness and Prevention of Substance Harms with Northern Health who says that the campaign aimed at highlighting tools that were free and accessible to the public, “It just gives you one more tool in the toolbox.”

Weich also mentions that if the app isn’t what works for you, there are other methods to ensure your mental health stays in check with supports such as Foundry BC.
