Apples don’t fall far from trees but bears may make you wish they did: Disposing of apples properly

PRINCE GEORGE–There are several ways to dispose of your backyard apple-tree’s fruit to ensure they don’t go to waste, and that you and the bears stay safe.

The Northern Lights Estate Winery is one of the places you can drop off a box of apples to. The winery has been collecting fruits since it first opened four years ago, and to date have collected 80,000 pounds of apples. This year alone however, they are hoping to collect 30-40, thousand pounds of apples. With the apples, they create an apple wine named Lumiere Blanche. The winery will not be taking apples until August 19th.

The winery is just one of many places to take your fruits, the Prince George Fruit Exchange Facebook page is available for people in the community to post about their trees so community members can help themselves to the fresh fruit.

Hobby Brews is another option in town which allows the public to bring in their fruits and convert them into wine. The Northern Lights Wildlife Society in Smithers is also taking apples as well as long as they are not unripe or rotten, boxes of apples can be dropped off at Independent Glass Distributors on Robertson Rd. during operating hours in order to support the society.
