Wildfires rage in northwest B.C.
TELEGRAPH CREEK, B.C. — The B-C Wildfire Service is bracing for what could be several difficult days in northwestern B-C as strong winds in the forecast have the potential to kick up wildfires in the Cassiar Fire Zone.
Windy conditions are expected to continue until Friday and the wildfire service says that could increase activity on the 14-square kilometre Tagish Lake fire, burning along the southwestern shore of the lake, about 40 kilometres west of Atlin.
Evacuation orders and alerts remain in place for that blaze, one of several large wildfires in the region, and the wildfire service is using sprinklers to protect a number of recreational cabins closest to the flames.
Seventeen firefighters are working on the ground, backed by air tankers that dropped retardant around the cabins — while sprinklers have also been set up at a fish camp at Tahltan Lake, west of Telegraph Creek, where a separate, 25-square kilometre wildfire continues to rage.
