PRINCE GEORGE – It seems every day, there’s more news of tough times in the forest sector. Most recently, Canfor announced curtailment its Houston, Polar, PG Sawmill and Fort St. John operations, beginning next week. But, oddly enough, the stats show that in the region, 2,400 jobs were created in the forestry and oil and gas sectors.

“From my perspective, that’s largely the result of the natural gas opportunities that are happening in the region,” says Melissa Barcellos with the City’s Economic Development branch. Coastal GasLink, in particular.

“We had a job fair the other night in Mackenzie with about a hundred participants. And we had another one a couple of weeks ago in Bear Lake,” explains Kiel Giddens wth TC Energy. “And we have a series of nine open house and job fair events across Northern BC for September and October, including one here in Prince George on October 16th.”

He says, right now, the project is availing of the work of logging contractors to clear the sites for pending work camps in Fort Fraser, Vanderhoof and McLeod Lake.
