UNBC unveiled their new Nenachalhuya, cedar plank project Monday afternoon.

32 panels of cedar planks will feature artwork which was submitted by various and diverse Northern B.C First Nations.

To complete the project, UNBC has selected Cree/Dakelh artist Clayton Gauthier to do all of the carvings.

“I am still kind of taking it all in. When they told me they wanted me to do this project, it was pretty overwhelming,” stated Gauthier to CKPG.

“I am honoured. There are really no words to describe how I feel. It’s emotional, heartfelt, loving, and just feeling the power of creators work.”

Gauthier has been an artist for most of his life and has been doing carving for the past 10 years.

“I am just going to do it piece by piece and commit to that and learn as I go. Each piece is going to be different. Each piece of wood is different. Understanding that some may take longer than others I am just going to go with the flow and I am committed to completing this project.”

Gauthier will be working on the project at UNBC on Monday’s and Thursday’s.

Everyone is welcome to join Gauthier while he works and to observe the creation of UNBC history.
