PRINCE GEORGE – While the results of the federal election came in late last night, the numbers for the student vote were released today.

Just over 800 Duchess Park Secondary School students elected the Green candidate for Prince George-Peace River-Northern Rockies, with 223 votes. The NDP came second, the incumbent Conservatives placed third, the Liberals came in next while the Peoples’ Party came in last with 59 votes. Green success was not a surprise.

“A huge issue right is the environment and the Green Party, especially for teenagers and my age right now,” says Tula Moore, one of the students who organized the mock election. “So to see the Greens come out on top was not surprising and NDP, too was really, really close behind.”

In fact, Duchess Park students joined 1,181,053 students across the country who held mock elections. But the results were somewhat different. Nationally, the Liberals form a minority government followed by the NDP close behind, while the Conservatives placed third.

“I think defintely parents, family, have an influence on the next generation of voters,” says Kiersten Mikkelsen, who was tasked with organizing the all-candidates forum prior to the election.

With the students now experiencing voter the average voter does, they have switched roles. They have formed twelve political parties and are heading out on the campaign trail this week.
