Get the lead out

Hunters urged to stop using lead ammunition

PRINCE GEORGE – Two B-C raptor experts say it’s time for hunters to get the lead out of ammunition to stop large birds of prey from being poisoned.

The Orphaned Wildlife Rehabilitation Society in Delta say it’s treating two eagles for lead poisoning and it can see up to 20 raptors for the same problem each year.

Long-time raptor caretaker, Rob Hope says the birds are poisoned when they scavenge animals killed with lead ammunition that is still widely used to hunt large game and upland game birds, such as grouse or pheasant.

Surrey wildlife biologist Myles Lamont is also urging hunters to stop using lead ammunition and says he hopes such calls will lead to a province-wide ban.
