PRINCE GEORGE – With the UNBC Faculty Association deciding to take down the pickets and announcing they will be filing a bad-faith bargaining complaint against the UNBC administration, classes will commence for now.

In the meantime, a special meeting of Senate has been called for Monday, December 2 at 3:30 p.m. in the Senate Chambers to consider the removal of the Exam Period and alternate arrangements for evaluation and completion of courses and academic requirements for the September semester.

Provost and Vice President of Academic, Dr. Dan Ryan says the University will advise students on the outcome of this meeting immediately following the Senate Meeting.

Ryan’s statement has been posted on the University’s website.

“While we still have not achieved a negotiated agreement, I am grateful to Faculty for this decision, happy to welcome our students back to classes and looking forward to supporting the successful semester completion.”

The Faculty Association has decided to return to work while they await their complaint to be reviewed by the Labour Relations Board.

“We are disappointed that we have to take this complaint to the Board,” said UNBC FA Vice-President Paul Siakaluk. “We hoped that the presence of a special mediator and the legal counsel for both parties would lead to a quick resolution of this issue during yesterday’s negotiating session. Unfortunately, that did not happen.”

The decision to file the complaint before the Labour Relations Board (LRB), was made early on Friday, asking for a ruling that the Employer has been guilty of bargaining in bad faith.
