HIXON, B.C. – A relaxing Saturday evening in a hot tub turned into a nightmare as 60-year-old Bruce Brady sat inside his truck watching his home burn to the ground 15 kilometres north of Hixon.

This past weekend, while his wife was on a trip to Vancouver, Brady heard his dog barking inside his house. The barking continued, getting louder the longer it went on. Bruce got up out the hot tub on his back deck to check, only to find thick black smoke quickly filling the house.

A phone call to 9-1-1 ended with Brady being told that due to his home being outside of the fire protection zone of the Hixon Fire Department, there was nothing that could be done, leaving Brady to watch his home burn to the ground from the seat of his truck.

Even if a fire department was able to respond, they wouldn’t have arrived in time as the fire destroyed the structure in a matter of minutes.

The cause of the fire is unknown, but Bruce believes it may have been a chimney fire that got up between floors.

Being grandparents to 15, Bruce and Lorraine were expecting to welcome over 20 family members for Christmas. Their home had become a traditional site for family over the holidays for the past decade.

According to the couple’s son-in-law, the couple had been working to reinsure their home and had recently purchased thousands of dollars worth of supplies. That’s now all gone.

“It’s quite devastating to lose everything that you own,” said their son-in-law John Goes. “Especially around this time of year when the snows on the ground. There’s not much you can do to get yourself back to a stable situation.”

Lorraine’s daughter, Kristin, said her mother has always been one to lend a helping hand.

“I’m just hoping that I can at least help them get started on something to rebuild. I know how much that property means to them and I know they’ve been struggling to get renovate for a long time to get it insured. This has been a concern for a while, we’ve always been scared that something like this would happen.”

A GoFundMe page has been started to help Bruce and Lorraine rebuild from the ground up.

“I just want to see my mom not have to work so hard. I just want her to be okay. She’s worked her whole life. She’s always the first one to help anybody and I just want her to know that people want to help her, too.”
