VANDERHOOF–School District 91 is one step closer to implementing menstrual products in all of its schools.

A ministerial order was made back in April by the Ministry of Education requiring all public schools to provide free menstrual products in elementary and high school washrooms across the province. “This is a common-sense step forward that is, frankly, long overdue,” said Education Minister Rob Flemming.

Since the announcement staff at SD91 have drafted a new policy for its Board of Education, searching for the best way to implement the program. Two styles of dispensers were chosen in November and have recently begun being installed in washrooms.

The school district anticipates that all schools will be equipped with free menstrual products by Dec.10. BC is the first province in Canada to mandate free menstrual products in schools.

School District 57 Board Chair, Tim Bennett says that students in Prince George will have access to free menstrual products in washrooms when they return from winter break.

“We’re always looking at how we can take steps forward and being able to again, take one more step to providing equitable services to all students regardless of gender, or how they may identify…it’s really an incredible step forward for the BC public education system,” said Bennett.
