Raising Josh: Mother writes about experience raising son with Down syndrome

DAWSON CREEK– A “labour of love,” that is what a mother of four is calling a story about her four adopted children, all four born with special needs.

Judy Boyer and her husband John adopted their first son, Josh in 1994. Josh was born with Down Syndrome and was the first of their adoptive children. In the nine years following they became parents to three more children.

Boyer says the idea to write her book, Raising Josh: A Special Needs Adoption Love Story, was brought on by Josh’s joy, spirit and character when he came into their family; saying she wanted to track all aspects of his growth. As the years went on and Josh’s needs became more complex she continued to write in hopes that one day her experiences would help her connect with and help other parents with children in similar circumstances.

The process was a bit of a bumpy road for Boyer, “I needed so badly to talk to someone else who might understand. It was also a process, coming to terms with the fact that the child we caught a glimpse of in the beginning was not the same child we were seeing develop in front of us,” said Boyer.
