PRINCE GEORGE – The heads of two major projects in BC were front and centre at the Prince George Chamber of Commerce True North 2020 event.

The CEO of LNG Canada, Peter Zebedee, and President of Coastal GasLink, David Pfeiffer, addressed the luncheon crowd.

The fireside chat started with a rundown of the latest developments around the Wet’suwet’en Hereditary Chiefs and their blockade of the Coast GasLink site. The company has still issued a request to meet with the Hereditary Chiefs.

But the conversation quickly turned to a rundown of the economic benefits of both projects.

“We ended the year 2019 with just over 1,500 people on the site So it’s a large workforce,” explains Zebedee. “And we’ll grow to just over 3,000 construction workers on the Kitimat site by the end of 2020.”

LNG Canada has awarded a billion dollars worth of contracts to BC businesses, $500 million of that has been awarded to First Nations businesses.

As for Coastal GasLink,

“We’ve got about a thousand workers on the project right now. That’ll ramp up to about 2,500 this summer,” explains David Pfeiffer, who says this summer and the next will be the busiest for construction.

They also talked about the environmental significance of the LNG Canada project.

“The emissions from this facility are about 50% better than the emissions from any other LNG-producing facilities anywhere on the globe and they’re about 30% better than the next best.”

Zebedee says what LNG Canada is sending to Asian markets will reduce 60 to 90 tonnes of coal-fired emissions every year.
