NEW HAZELTON– 14 individuals were arrested, and a reported near-miss collision between a male and a train yesterday, Monday, Feb.24.

According to a release from BC RCMP, RCMP were called to assist the Canadian National (CN) Police Service after nearly two dozen protestors hade blocked the CN Rail tracks west of New Hazelton.

The near-miss collision occurred between a male on the tracks and a train prior to CN Rail becoming aware of the blockade.

At the request of CN Rail to enforce their court-ordered injunction, RCMP arrested a total of seven people who at the time refused to leave CN Rail’s private property. RCMP transported them to the New Hazelton Police detachment. The seven were released shortly after 3 a.m. with an upcoming court date, and conditions to abide by the injunction order.

A large group of protestors remained in the area throughout Monday evening and blocked Highway 16. Later into the evening police noticed that four of their patrol cars had had their tires slashed, the RCMP is investigating the criminal action.

The RCMP would like to remind the public that the attempts to block rail tracks is extremely dangerous and unlawful.
