PRINCE GEORGE — In anticipation of the upcoming federal budget, the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) has released a set of recommendations titled Building Better Lives with Budget 2020.

First Vice-President of FCM and Prince George City Councillor Garth Frizzell argues the budget offers some key opportunities.

“Whether it’s permanent transit funding, climate action, or access to adequate broadband, municipalities are ready to bring life to the commitments we’ve heard from this government,” he says.

“It is an opportunity for the government to show it can deliver for Prince George, and FCM is offering a clear path to results that people see and feel in their daily lives.”

Frizzell says FCM has laid out three paths to reach these goals:

Strengthening communities of all sizes: Providing better local infrastructure, investing in Canada’s rural and northern communities. This includes rural mobility and transportation solutions and access to adequate broadband.

Local climate action that builds better lives: Cutting commutes and emissions with permanent transit funding. Making rental housing more energy efficient, strengthening tools for local disaster mitigation.

New progress on housing affordability: Investing directly in supportive housing along with social/afforable housing for Indigenous households.

These recommendations follow a recent FCM meeting in St-Hyacinthe, Quebec.
