PRINCE GEORGE – It’s a golden year for the Spruce City Wildlife Association.

It is celebrating its 50th anniversary.

As part of the celebrations, there are a number of events planned. One of them involves improvements to Nelson Lake down the Blackwater Road.

“We’re going to be in some campsites and some day-use areas. There’s also going to be a fishing dock put in by Freshwater Fisheries BC. So it will be an area where people can go, take the family and go fish for the day.”

They are also planning a Trout Park to the west of the hatchery on River Road. Currently, the hatchery pumps 1,000 litres of water, per minute, from 3 wells, through the hatchery troughs then discharges the water into the Nechako. The Association would like to divert this water into the seasonal trout pond.

But the true feather in the Association’s conservation hat is the planned release of thousands of Chinook Salmon.

“This year we managed to take about 10,000 eggs from the Endako to the hatchery here, fertilize them successfully with sone cryogenically-frozen milt that’s been frozen for about 20 years. So we’re pretty excited about that.”

The eggs in question are from a “functionally extinct” fish. The survival of these highly “at-risk” salmon was seriously compounded as a result of the Big Bar slide last year.
