Winter tire regulations still in effect for some highways across BC

VICTORIA—The Ministry of Transportation is reminding British Columbians that winter tire regulations are in effect until the end of April.

Winter tire regulations remain in place on several Highways across BC until April 30. While highways and roads remain open, the government wants to remind the public that BC’s Provincial Health Officer is recommending that people stay close to home and avoid any non-essential travel.

Those who must travel should ensure that their tires are in good condition and have a minimum tread depth of 3.5 millimetres. On rural highways and mountain passes, tires with the mountain /snowflake symbol provide the best traction and handling.

Tips for driving in winter conditions:

  • Check weather forecast and adjust travel times to more favourable conditions
  • Check DriveBC for current road conditions
  • Wear comfortable clothing that does not restrict movement while driving, but bring warm clothing
  • Have an emergency plan. Ensure the vehicle has a full tank of gas and is equipped with a windshield scraper and snow brush, food and water, a first aid kit and other emergency supplies
  • If stuck or stranded, don’t panic. Stay with the vehicle for safety and warmth and call road-side assistance—unless it’s an emergency, than dial 911

Last winter, winter tire regulations were extended to April 30th from March 31st on select highways, most of which are located in the Interior and northern parts of the province. Road conditions can change quickly and snowfall is still possible.
