Wildfire detours provide economic boost for Valemount businesses
While wildfires in the South Cariboo continue to force highway closures and evacuations, the disruptions are creating an unexpected economic boost for businesses in Valemount.
The Village of Valemount has seen a noticeable increase in traffic as motorists seek alternate routes around the closure of Highway 97. Although exact traffic figures are not yet available, Mayor Owen Torgerson says local businesses are already feeling the impact.
“Everything’s subjective at this point,” said Torgerson. “But they have really noticed an increase in commercial traffic.”
Torgerson says restaurants throughout the community are busier, while fuel stations are seeing more travellers stop to refuel and restock supplies before continuing their journeys.
