Local Legion adapting to ever-changing COVID-19 situation
PRINCE GEORGE — The Prince George branch of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 43, is continuing business as usual, or as well as it can given current conditions.
Calls so far have not been too frequent. The Legion, though, suspects calls will increase the longer self-isolation and social distancing measures are being taken. They do have plans for when those calls eventually come, with Service Officer John Scott set to come into the office twice a week.
“I’m not out and about or here [at the Legion] as much as normally am,” explained Scott before moving on to a new project for Legion members currently in the works. “We are, right now, working on a program where we would like to make some masks for the hospital. I’m not sure if they are going to take them but we have a plan to make about 500 of them… I’m not sure where we are at with it. We may end up having to donate them to other people who might want them if they don’t want them at the hospital.”
Meanwhile, funding has been a bit of a struggle nationwide for Legion branches. Branch 43 is known locally for hosting plenty of events through the year but a lot of bookings have had to cancel. Branch 43 is looking to start a GoFundMe page to help with fundraising efforts.
