$9 billion for student support amidst COVID-19 crisis

OTTAWA—Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced this morning (Apr.22) that students across Canada will have access to financial support through a $9 billion investment.

Part of that investment includes the Canada Emergency Student Benefit has been created to support students amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.

Students who are unable to acquire a summer job, were planning on going to school or graduated in December of last year will have access to $1,250 a month from May-Aug.

Students who have dependants will see that financial support go up to $1,700 a month.

Trudeau announced that 76,000 jobs will be created for young people in sectors that need an extra hand due to the pandemic.

For students planning on volunteering in the coming months, they’ll be eligible for financial support of anywhere between $1,000 to $5,000 (based on the work they’re doing) through the Canada Student Service Grant.

The Canadian government will also double the amount of school bursaries for 2020-2021. Over $75 million will be allotted to support Inuit, Metis and First Nations students.
