OTTAWA—Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced help for those in the agri-food industry today, amidst the pandemic.

$252 million will go into helping the agri-food industry in Canada, announced Trudeau this morning in his daily COVID-19 response update.

$77 million is being allocated for food processors in order to protect the safety of their workers, and will aid in the purchase of PPE for workers, or aid in enhancing hygiene protocols.

For pork and beef producers the government of Canada is putting in place $125 million in agri-recovery—helping producers adapt to changes such as animals remaining on farms longer than usual, which Trudeau says can be costly. This is an initial investment, and the Prime Minister says that if more needs to be done, more will be.

Due to the pandemic, there has also been an increased waste of food across the country, said Trudeau; mentioning that farmers hard work is going to waste and businesses are losing money on un-eaten food. In order to combat food waste the government is launching a surplus food purchase program starting with a $50 million fund.

The government will buy a certain amount of food and distribute to organizations addressing food insecurity across the country.

Trudeau says that he understands there are other concerns for those in the agri-food industry have and is working with governments across the nation to continue to best serve them.

Trudeau closed his address by thanking everyone who works in the food industry.
