PG Humane Society launches campaign to help lose “quarantine weight”

PRINCE GEORGE – After already having to make changes to how they would operate, the Prince George Humane Society realized many of their fundraising plans for the year were no longer possible.

Instead of giving up on fundraising efforts, they got creative, and thus brought on the Pounds for Hounds concept, a way to tackle the complaints of “quarantine weight” by residents having to isolate themselves during the COVID-19 pandemic.

With June 8th marking the first of the fundraising campaign, Executive Director Angela McLaren hopes they’ll be able to reach their goal of $15,000 by the end of the eight-week challenge.

“It’s an opportunity to get fit, get out, get active, eat healthy, set a goal and raise some money for the animals,” said McLaren. “The great thing a part of this challenge is that it is an eight-week challenge. It doesn’t mean you have to start today. You can register at any point of the eight weeks. We just want people to get healthy”

When you do register for the challenge, you receive your own personal website page where you can tell you own story, upload photos, as well as videos.

While the challenge did start as a two-legged program, the staff at the PG Humane Society found that quarantine weight also can find itself on those four-legged friends too.

“Interestingly enough, there are a lot of animals that do battle with weight loss. We had a cat just over a year ago that weighed 30 pounds that came to the shelter. She went on a year-long weight loss challenge and is now 17 pounds. She’s started her own page for the Pounds for Hounds for animals to lose weight as well.

So whether it’s for yourself or for your four-legged pal, those interested in participating can register at the PG Humane Society website.
