City and RD keeping an eye on river levels

PRINCE GEORGE – Paddlewheel Park is something of a bellwether for high water in the city proper and the water levels on the Fraser River rose rapidly last night.

“The water did come up last night. The forecast from River Forecast Centre is that it’s supposed to come up another foot or up 30 centimetres, peaking at 9.5 later today,” explains Adam Davey, Director of Community Services and Public Safety.

He says residents along Farrell Road have been notified of the City’s concerns, but no formal alerts or orders have been issued.

The same cannot be said for the Regional District of Fraser Fort Georgre, which conducted a flight over the area yesterday evening.

“Right now we’re kind of in a holding pattern,” explains Renee McCloskey with the Regional District. “We issued the evacuation alerts for about 70 properties along the Dore River near McBride. Right now we’re just monitoring things. It looks like the water level has gone down, which is good news, but it is still extremely high.”

The City has also closed Cottonwood Island Park and the Heritage River trail system out of an abundance of caution.
