PRINCE GEORGE–UNBC Men’s Basketball team is welcoming its newest addition for the 2020-21 Canada West Season.

Payton Tirrell, originally from Woodinville, Washington, USA played his fourth season of university basketball (2018-2019) at Grand Prairie Regional College (GPRC) in Alberta, where he starred for the GPRC Wolves. After a year away from the game he decided to return to the court for a final season and play the game at the highest level in Canadian university sport.

“I have watched a lot of film and seen games in person, and I feel like the next step for me is to play at the U SPORTS level, and show what I can do. I have done that at the CCAA level and I want to turn it up now. Play against better competition and play in better systems. Coach Jordan gave me an opportunity, and that is what sports is. Someone gives you an opportunity and you run with it.”–Payton Tirrell, UNBC Timberwolves

Tirrell says that the biggest thing for him was finding a place where he could fit in and where his coach would coach him hard. “That year off taught me a lot about myself and allowed me to make sure I am ready for this opportunity in my last year,” said Tirrell.

In 2018-2019, Tirrell was an Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference All-Star, after a season where he averaged 19.9 points and 3.7 assists per game.
