Cunningham hoping for a big year in 20/21 with Kings

Next year is shaping up to be much different for the Spruce Kings.

With many returning players coming back into the fold and the addition of a number of veteran players from around the league, the Kings are hoping to be back at the top of the BCHL standings.

One player who is hoping to lead the charge is Prince George product Corey Cunningham.

The 18-year-old found the back of the net 26 times this past year, which is up from 8 in the 18/19 season.

Cunningham is excited for next year as the Kings are set to bring back a strong returning core.

“I am really looking forward to it. I think we have a great group of guys and I think we can really push for a top playoff spot this year,” shared Cunningham to CKPG.

Then mix in the addition of a couple of BCHL veterans through transactions during the off-season, and the team’s roster is shaping up to be a good one.

For Cunningham, this is extremely exciting, even though it means saying goodbye to a few of his friends.

“It’s tough to see a few of my good buddies leave the team, but Mike (Hawes) knows what he is doing and we are really going to make a push this year to be one of those top teams.”

Off-season training has been a challenge for Cunningham, just like every hockey player this summer. However, he has managed to put in the work and even get on the ice a bit.

“It has been difficult. It was really difficult at the start. I was just training at home at the start of the first few months. Then I started to get back into it doing X-Conditioning 5 times a week with one of my buddies from the Island who plays Junior B. We got it down pat and I think this is a great off-season to build up for next year and I am super excited for it,” added Cunningham.

Despite the rink closures in Prince George, Cunningham has been travelling down to Williams Lake to skate on the 3 on 3 rink there to make sure he is at the top of his game for next season.

The 20/21 campaign will be Cunningham’s 4th in the league and he is hopeful it is the best one yet.

As a result, he has his sights set on some big goals for the 2020-2021 season.

“I want to hit 35-40 goals. I want to push our team. I want to be at least Top 4 in the league. In our division I want us to be one of the top 3 teams and in the league, I want to make at least the semi-finals and I think we can push that even further and I really think we can win the Fred Page Cup this year.”
