Sander looking to lead by example in final year

This past year was a breakout year for Cougars defenceman Jack Sander.

The Beaumont, Alberta product saw his point total climb from 7 to 28, and was out on the ice in every situation for the club.

“It was definitely a break out year for me,” shared Sander to CKPG.

“Coming in my 3rd season, I wanted to make a lot of strides and push the pace and be a leader, and I think I did that.”

It’s been a long off-season for all of the players in the league as they get ready for next year, and for Sander, there are a number of things he had his sights set on which he wanted to improve.

“Being aggressive. Making sure I am a physical body out there. Also stepping up in the rush and being physical and aggressive. Also coming into this year I want to be a leader so just trying to get in that mindset right away,” explained Sander.

This will allow the 20-year-old blue liner more time to train because of the announcement of the season being pushed back to December 4th, and despite the unfortunate news, the veteran defenceman knows it is the right thing to do.

“It was tough to hear, but it is definitely necessary. Covid is still going pretty crazy, so I definitely get it. We need to take the proper precautions and stay safe.”

Sander will be entering his 4th and final year with the Cats and he hopes he can continue to take his game to new heights in his final year of Junior.

“Being that guy on the power play and penalty kill. Shutting down and on the power play just setting guys up. I want to be a leader and make sure I am improving and setting everyone else up for a good year.”
