PRINCE GEORGE–A northern B.C. doctor is being recognized for his work in rural medicine.

Dr. Tracy Morton, who’s been working on Haida Gwaii since 2000, has been awarded the 2020 BC Rural Health Award of Excellence in Rural Medicine: Lifetime Achievement. The award is one of three given to doctors practicing medicine in rural areas of the province.

Morton is originally from a small town in Alberta and moved to an even smaller town on Haida Gwaii in 2000. During his time on the archipelago, Dr. Morton has worked to stimulate remote medicine. He says that he believes that health-care in a rural environment can be just as good as anywhere else in Canada.

Morton highlights how much he appreciates the fact that he can hop into his canoe and head to work for the day, living on Haida Gwaii. Morton’s professional interests include, specializations in general practitioner oncologist, novel uses of point-of-care ultrasound, text-messaging in primary care and emergency medicine.
