STEWART–Skeena-Bulkley Valley M.P., Taylor Bachrach, along with NDP Public Safety critic Jack Harris St. John’s East M.P., wrote to the Public Safety Minister expressing their support for the proposal to make Stewart-Hyder an integrated trans-border community.

Hyder is only accessible to the public by road through Stewart, on the Canadian side of the border. Hyder residents rely on access to Stewart for services such as groceries, gas and access to schools and medical assistance.

“In many ways, Stewart-Hyder is one community divided by an international border.”–Taylor Bachrach, M.P., Skeena-Bulkley Valley

“Locals deserve a common-sense solution that allows their community to function, while also protecting public health and national security. I want to make sure that the government listens to what residents are asking for and help make the community whole again,” said Bachrach.

Bachrach says that after meeting with residents of the area he understands how much the new border restrictions are affecting their lives.

“While Hyder residents have been granted permission to cross the border for a few hours each week for specific reasons, there are people who haven’t left the community in several months and are suffering from social isolation.”–Taylor Bachrach, M.P., Skeena-Bulkley Valley

Bachrach says that the situation in Stewart-Hyder is different from re-opening the border between southern Canada and the U.S. Given that it is a remote, isolated community cut off from the rest of the U.S., it would seem that the risk is exceptionally low,” added Bachrach.
