PRINCE GEORGE–Do you support businesses mandating masks?

That was this week’s CKPG News Question of the week, and with a total of 2,555 votes, it was almost 50/50. 52 per cent of our Facebook respondents said that they did support businesses mandating masks, while 48 per cent said they didn’t.

Locally, there are a few stores that are mandating masks, not only for staff but customers as well. Of those, Fabricland was one of the first to do so when they reopened in May.

“We can’t always maintain the two metres social distancing…so that (masks) ensures that we are keeping our germs to ourselves. We wear this for you and the customer is wearing their mask for us.”–Cory Waller, Assistant Manager, Fabricland

“May 19th. It’s been mandatory since then,” said Waller in an on-camera interview. And since then Waller says that they’ve received quite the reaction from some members of the public. “For the most part, probably about 80 per cent are quite receptive…but we have had a lot of people..as you probably can imagine…that aren’t very happy with it.”

Locally, Walmart, Old Navy and Fabricland are few of the stores mandating customers to wear masks upon entry.

“So what masks really do well, and these are just the plain surgical masks or cloth masks, what they do really well is they prevent droplets that you produce so when you cough or sneeze, it prevents those from spreading around.”–Rakel Kling, Medical Health Officer, Northern Health

The BC Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC) says that masks can be worn in order to protect those around you from catching COVID-19, and should be worn by people who are sick.

“COVID-19 is spread through infected droplets from a sick person’s mouth or nose. Wearing a mask when you are sick, helps protect people around you from the droplets that carry the virus. However, wearing a mask while sick does not change the need to stay home. If you cannot physically distance yourself from others at home, a mask can help prevent the spread of germs within the household,” reads a paragraph off of the BCCDC’s website. The wearing of masks has been recommended by B.C.’s Provincial Health Officer, Dr. Bonnie Henry, as a way of protecting British Columbians from the potential spread of COVID-19.
