PRINCE GEORGE – The Doctor’s Case produced by local film company Barker Street Cinema has gone international with nominations for awards in the UK.

The Doctor’s Case produced by local filmmaker Norm Coyne is up for three awards at the Romford Film Festival east of London.

  • Best Supporting Actress – Denise Crosby
  • Best Supporting Actor – William B. Davis
  • Best Feature Film

Coyne says this international recognition is a sign of things to come for the growing film industry in Northern B.C.

“Every time we participate in these festivals it allows us a chance to connect with other filmmakers and actors, ” says Coyne. ” You never know who’s going to be in the audience.”

Prince George caught the interest of Hollywood in the early 2000’s with titles like Dreamcatcher and Reindeer Games, something Coyne says he wants to revive.

“I think with Prince George it’s so versatile, I think of the university and how it could be turned into something Sci-Fi, or the Ancient Forest, even different landmarks around the city they could be adapted.”

For Coyne, he sees Prince George as more of a hub contrary to just a filming location.

MLA Shirley Bond says diversifying the economy in Northern B.C. is good news for everyone.

“Anywhere beyond Hope, it seems like we have to work hard to get the attention of the rest of British Columbia”

Bond says recent successes like The Doctors Case, show that Prince George and area has the talent and the skilled workers to put together something even bigger.

One area Bond did mention is having the facilities to teach and develop young filmmakers within the city, something she hopes can also help solidify Prince George.
