Could mask-wearing protocols become stricter?

PRINCE GEORGE — While it is not a provincial health order yet, Dr. Bonnie Henry is making it known mask-wearing should be a greater focus when in stores after this weekend’s surge in COVID-19 cases. During Monday’s press conference, she said, “In light of the increased risk we’re seeing right now as we move into respiratory season and influenza season, I’m also stepping up our recommendations and advice around wearing masks. It is now the expectation that people will wear a non-medical mask when in public spaces.

“It’s not an order because this is something that I know we support as part of our mutual responsibilities to protect ourselves and protect each other. As part of this, I’m asking businesses to review their COVID-19 safety plans.”

As it stands right now, COVID-19 safety guidelines in stores are determined by the store themself in BC. Some outlets in Prince George have included masks-wearing as part of those protocols such as Wal-Mart and Superstore. Some other places, specifically non-chains, are waiting on the call from our Provincial Health Officer.

“Partly it’s Dr. Bonnie Henry and what she is looking for us to do and part of it is our own comfort level,” explained Shayne Hoehn, owner of Stride & Glide Sports. “In the last month-ish, we’ve seen probably 80-plus percent of our customers coming in already wearing a mask. And those who aren’t, another good percentage of them have it in their pocket and are putting it on when they come in and see that we are wearing it. So it’s been a pretty nice transition.”
