PRINCE GEORGE – It’s been a passion project for several years now for both Anita Watts and her partner Rod Cryderman.

Fester n Rott Cemetery will look much different this Halloween, however.

This year, due to COVID-19, they won’t be having trick or treaters to their door, but rather they’ve pieced together a walkable haunted house through their garage for witches and ghouls to come see.

As numerous Halloween traditions in and around Prince George have been cancelled due to the pandemic, the couple felt they needed to keep their traditional haunted house alive.

“It is our passion and we still wanted to share it, but we were thinking what would be the best way to do it so people wouldn’t feel like they couldn’t come and enjoy it,” explained Watts.

As a result, they won’t be having trick-or-treaters come to their front door this year, opting to go in a completely different direction than past years.

They’ve completely converted their garage into a one-lane haunted house walk, with a themed-focus on Stephen King’s ‘IT‘.

“We’re going to try to space the people out, so we’ll have someone at the entrance just to guide them,” explained Watts. “When they go through the new addition, which is the interior of our garage, we will space them out in only their groups. We’ll wait for the first group to leave before the next group will be let in.”

Both Watts and Cryderman ask anyone interested in attending their haunted house does adhere to public health orders and guidelines.

“Take your time going through. There’s a lot of little pieces you might want to look at. But just be safe and help us all to enjoy this season.”

Watts admits it was important that they remained true to themselves this year in continuing their tradition.

“We have a following now. It’s built up on Facebook and the neighbours rely on us to set this up. They look forward to it. Now it’s almost come to the point where we can’t say no, and we’re stuck,” she chuckled. “It’s important just to let people enjoy it. Especially this year.”

Located on Virk Place in Vanway, the annual haunted house has cost in the ballpark of $20,000, according to Anita and Rod, who may have been hesitant to admit that fact.
