1,120 new cases of COVID-19 in B.C., largest weekend surge

The north saw an increase of ten cases for a total of 422. There were six new deaths over the weekend for a provincial total of 269. There are 2,945 active cases in B.C. and 6,448 people are under active public health monitoring for being exposed to a known case of the virus.

There are 90 people in hospital and of those 19 are in ICU. The Health Authority that saw the highest increase of cases was Fraser Health.

While Deputy Provincial Health Officer, Dr.Réka Gustafson says that the increase in numbers are concerning she highlighted the fact that we have learned a lot about the virus over the past several months.

The spike in cases is being pinned on indoor gatherings, as temperatures cool down and British Columbians are forced into indoor activities. Indoor gatherings can be highly effective in spreading COVID-19, and Dr. Gustafson is reminding British Columbians that keeping our groups small this fall and winter season will determine how the virus continues to spread in our communities.

There are now 28 active outbreaks in the health care system. No new community outbreaks were reported.
