City gets Restart money

PRINCE GEORGE – It was with a sigh of relief that Mayor Lyn Hall could announce to Council the amount of money granted to the City from the federal Restart Program.

The City will get $6.1 million and it can be used to offset the financial deficit the City has because of COVID-19.

“We’re ecstatic at receiving that. We think we can use those dollars in a number of ways.”

For the Federation of Canadian Municipalities, the lobbying began early.

“In March, when we started getting a sense of what impact COVID was going to have,” says Garth Frizzell, President of the Canadian Municipalities. He says the lobbying continued through the spring and, in July, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced the $18 billion dollar Restart Program.

The money was forwarded to the Province for distribution, but an election put that on hold. But the Province has now set out each community’s allocation. Even better is that there are no strings attached

“We’ve got a tremendous amount of flexibility and it’s a gamut of things we can use the money for,” explains Mayor Hall.

Since the pandemic closed civic facilities and killed other revenue sources, the City is facing a deficit well over that amount.
