PRINCE GEORGE – It will be a Remembrance Day like no other.

For the first time in the Royal Canadian Legion’s 95-year history, Canadians are being asked not to attend Remembrance Day services across the country.

In Prince George, the annual Remembrance Day ceremony hosted by Legion Branch 43 at the cenotaph outside city hall will be closed to the public this year due to COVID-19 guidelines. However, starting at 10:30 a.m., CKPG-TV will present combined pre-recorded and live presentation, while at around 10:40 a.m., on November 11th, the live outdoor ceremony will be streamed through Blake Productions’ YouTube channel and through the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 43’s Facebook page.

Margaret Goings, president of Branch 43, is also encouraging people to mark two minutes of silence by standing at the end of their driveways at 11 a.m. Due to recommendations by Provincial Health Officer Dr Bonnie Henry, the Legion will be closed for Remembrance Day.

“It’s been years,” Goings emphatically says. “My husband has been a member for 45 years and he says he has never missed a Remembrance Day service until this year. We have a member who’s having his 75th year here, so a lot of them are going to miss this.”

It was the decision of the BC/Yukon Command Royal Canadian Legion to have all branches across their compass to be closed on Nov. 11.

People who want to lay a wreath or poppy at the cenotaph are asked to do so between 11:30 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. while wearing a mask and following physical distancing guidelines.

“Our event will end before 11:30 at the cenotaph, and from that point on to 1:00 p.m., the flags and wreaths will still be up, so there’s still the opportunity for any member of the public to come down once the event is over to put a wreath down, put their poppies down; take a moment to reflect and remember,” said Cpl. Craig Douglass of the Prince George RCMP.

Following our coverage at the Cenotaph, a half-hour CKPG News Special will air at 11:30 and throughout the day, focusing on the history of the legion from its earliest years when it was first founded back in 1925.
