PRINCE GEORGE – A 3.1 per cent increase to remuneration was approved by the School District No. 57 Board of Trustees on Tuesday (Nov. 24).

The increase will see a mere $55 in the pocket of each of the board’s seven members.

As a result, the increase adds $4,620 to the operating budget.

According to Board Chair Trent Derrick, the previous board implemented the policy that dictates how remuneration is increased for trustees as the roles of trustees have become more demanding.

“I think the demands come from social media. The expectation that trustees get back to people immediately, whether that’s on Twitter or on Facebook. That’s part of the job now, you need to be available 24/7,” said Derrick.

He says they work approximately 25 to 30 hours a week, on top of their already existing employment responsibilities.

In 2018, the board approved increases that would see a yearly remuneration increase from $15,544 to $18,200, an increase of 17 per cent.

In 2019, the board raised amounts to a 1.75 per cent pay hike.

With Tuesday’s approved increase, a trustee in SD57 will make $19,662 annually.

Remuneration is reviewed annually by the school district.
