PRINCE GEORGE – With Cabinet sworn in yesterday and BC Liberal MLA’s sworn in today, the work of the Legislature will begin in earnest.

“As I look at the distribution of Cabinet, we’re going to have to work very hard as the Opposition to make sure that the voices and concerns of people outside the geography of the Cabinet are heard,” says Shirley Bond, Leader of the Opposition.

What she is referring to as the “geography of Cabinet” is the fact that of the 24 Cabinet Ministers and 13 Parliamentary Secretaries, only four are not from the Lower Mainland or Vancouver Island. And only two North of Hope. They are Jennifer Rice from the North Coast is now the Parliamentary Secretary for Emergency Preparedness and Nathan Cullen from Stikine is now the Minister of State for Lands and Natural Resource Operations.

While UNBC Political Scientist Jason Morris says that representation is largely a factor of the election, saying “a Premier must select where members were elected from and didn’t have as much flexibility there.”

However, what caught his attention was the size of the Cabinet, which 24 Ministers and 13 Parliamentary Secretaries. That’s an additional seven positions.

“I think in these pandemic times, it would have been judicious to have a smaller, leaner Cabinet since British Columbians themselves are having to tighten their belts,” says Morris. “We got, along with the Parliamentary Secretaries, a Cabinet that’s two-thirds the size of the NDP Caucus.”

Now that the BC Liberal MLA’s have been sworn in, Bond has some work ahead.

“We’re going to be finalizing the Critic portfolios and finalizing the leadership team that will take us into the Legislature. The discussion then becomes ‘What does the session look like?’ If there is one. What will the issues be that the government intends to bring to the House and then preparing our critics so they can do the jobs that we expect of them as Opposition critics.”

Premier John Horgan has already said there will be a Throne Speech and a very brief sitting of the Legislature on December 7th.
