Is COVID affecting Prince George holiday spending habits?

PRINCE GEORGE — There has long been a push to support local businesses through the COVID pandemic and with less than a month until Christmas, the busiest time of the year for stores is officially here. But with uncertainty abounding as COVID continues to hinder our local economies, will that change the way locals are shopping this year?

“It hasn’t changed anything for me. I usually do things low-effort anyway and order online regardless.”

“I consider buying more local stuff because of how tough it is for stores.”

“Much more online because it is easy to no have to deal with any of the hassle or perceived negativity of going somewhere. It’s super easy to shop online but today I’m downtown shopping here.”

Restrictions and guidelines could also play a factor in it. Masks are now mandatory in BC when at indoor public spaces including stores. Some pushback, as a result, has come up, however, our Provincial Health Officer said she has “no time” for anti-maskers – asking shoppers to follow the current guidelines.

According to LOCO BC, only 64% of BC businesses are fully open following COVID closures. 41% are at normal staffing and just a third at pre-COVID revenues. But in Prince George, it seems the message of shop local has gotten across so far. Myah-Gale Edward, an employee at Sisters Rock n’ Gems, said, “sales are doing pretty good this year. COVID has honestly made sales go up quite a bit. Prince George has done a very good job of supporting local businesses.”

The Chamber of Commerce has also launched campaigns with incentives for shoppers to stay local.
